Danny Chan dies after 17-month coma
By May Fung
CANTO-POP superstar Danny Chan died yesterday after 17 months in a coma at the Queen Mary Hospital.
Police and security guards escorted Chan’s body from the hospital ward because more than 50 reporters and photographers were there, waiting for information about the cause of his death.
Chan, 35, died at 12.12 pm with his parents, brothers and sisters at his side.
His mother, Chan Yuk-mui, said: “One thing that comforted me was to see my beloved son passing away with a peaceful smile.
“I believe he held on to life for 17 months because he didn’t really want to leave his family and friends behind.”
Queen Mary Hospital consultant physician Michael Tsang, accompanied by
Danny Chan’s elder brother, Chan Pak-ling, announced Chan’s death at a crammed press conference.
“I couldn’t be sure of the causes of Chan’s coma but one thing I could be sure about was that he was sent to hospital in an unconscious state on 18 May last year and had been in a vegetative state ever since,” Tsang said.
“It’s possible, with a young chap like him, that alcohol or drugs could have caused the coma. His death was foreseen, as he suffered progressive brain failure in the last few days.”
In a special tribute to Chan, RTHK broadcast two programs yesterday of his hits and an interview from two months before his coma.
Last night, TVB ran a special program showing Danny Chan music videos and clips from his films.
