PALPABLE DARKNESS

Only Danny Chan would paint his entire house-form walls to furniture – in black. Black symbolized, at once, uncovered innocence and heavy experience.

Danny Chan is not who the darling prince we think he is. Yet, he was constantly compared with Leslie Cheung; the former considered a prince while the latter a rebellious spirit. Yet, aren’t the two mirrors of each other, two sides of the same coin?

It was era in full blossom. Canto-pop swept the entire Asia region. We had such figures as Joseph Koo, Jim Wong, Richard Lam, Poon Yuen Leung, Keith Chan, Lowell Lo, Peter Lai, Anthony Lun, Alvin Kwok, Lam Manyee, Cheung Kwok Kong… the list goes on and on.

Yet things turn and wilt after full blossom. Whether it is the music or the music-makers, those who have experienced such glory couldn’t live happily with themselves. No wonder the mega-stars of 1980s all fell, one after another.

One of those stars still blazed proudly, 20 years later in the pitch black sky. That far-away star is, I believe, Danny Chan.

暗黑浮世 反叛氣質

也只有陳百強會把整間房子,由家具到牆壁都髹成黑色.黑色是未鑿如璞的天真,也是沉稠如漆的經驗。

陳百強不是我們所理解的公子哥兒,他不是身穿白衬衫、配淺色開襟毛衣的溫儒書生。陳百强總被拿來和張國榮比較——無論是他當紅的八十年代的初期,還是張國榮後來居上的八十年代中期,他們一個被視為贵公子,一個被當作叛逆不羈。可是二人何尝不是對方的鏡子?在對方身上看見自己的另一面?

那是百花齊花的八十年代,粤語流行曲席捲兩岸三地。那時候,有「輝黃」組合——顾家輝/黃沾,有林振強,有潘源良,有陳少琪,有周禮茂,有冠廷,有蔡國權,有黎彼得,有偏永亮,有郭小霖,有林敏怡,有郑國江……这份名單如果要一直數下去,一定很長.

但世事往往是韶華勝極,過後無以為繼,無論是音樂,還是创造音樂的人,演繹音樂的人,試過萬人空巷的擁戴,也依然無法與自己安然相處,無怪乎八十年代過去後,巨星一顆一颗的殒落。

而那其中一颗,二十年後依然在漆黑的星空裡熠熠閃亮,那遥遠的星宿,信是陳百强.
